Report: The future of UK manufacturing

A major global steel company wanted to understand the position of the UK on the world stage, to discover where the competition is coming from, and to find out how other key countries are performing and what, if any, lessons, can be learned from them.

Key questions

• To identify the industries with the highest potential, including emerging industries and manufacturing trends.
• To identify areas that are interrelated with the success of manufacturing and which the UK should focus on.
• To identify major threats and areas in which Britain is more vulnerable, and therefore which aspects to focus on and what steps to take to make significant progress.

Methodology

• We undertook economic analysis to determine the framework of the research.
• We conducted in-depth interviews with high calibre / high profile experts and key opinion leaders, including: academics, industry experts, manufacturers in key sectors, media and financiers.

Outcome

• We prepared an Executive Summary for internal communication within the client company.
• We established further discussions with the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Parliamentary Scientific Committee, to define ways of operationalising the findings.
